How to Build a Bench
Building a bench from recycled plastic.
Recycled plastic Polly Planks and Polly Frames are ideal materials for the do-it-yourself project.
Polly Planks are manufactured using recycled milk jugs from households. When the color and ultra violet stabilizers (to protect from the sun’s harmful rays) are added they are very durable in the outdoors. The one characteristic that makes Polly Planks different from wood is rigidity. With wood you can span a wider distance. Polly planks work best on a 32” span or less.
So let’s build a bench. You can use normal woodworking tools; a power circular saw and a power drill for drilling and putting in screws. Carbide tipped tools are best if you plan on building more than a few.
Poly Frames are very dense much like oak wood and work best when a pilot hole is pre-drilled for the screw. If using our Polly frames, drill a pilot hole for the size screw you are using. In the Polly Plank, make a clearance hole with a countersink for the screw head. We use a #12 by 3” Phillips screw with a flat head. Drill a pilot hole in bench frame 1/8”and a clearance hole in Polly Plank ¼” with a countersink. If you buy the screws at a local home center, they can advise you on what tools to use.
The Polly Planks will be cut to length. It would be wise to put a slight angle on the cut edges with a file or wood rasp as this will make the ends safer. The bench frames will be trimmed but you will need to drill the holes for mounting the Polly Planks.
Hint: All of the benches on the Polly website have assembly instructions for our finished bench kits (a great place for ideas). Just pick a bench & go to the page, scroll down until you see the PDF file marked assembly instructions then click to open.
Eagle Scout Project
Prospective Eagle scouts are required to complete projects as part of the criteria of becoming a scout. A local Eagle scout candidate came to us after having problems working on his project. Our engineering department suggested solutions and Polly Products became part of the solution. Our plastic lumber was engraved on our CNC machine and the a colored inlay was added to make the wording more visible.
The young candidate met with the township board every step of the way until final approval was given. Polly Products works with Eagle scout candidates all over the United States supplying bench components and giving guidance on construction and installation. We should applaud our young citizens for seeking environmentally responsible building materials.
Earth Day 2010
Every year we celebrate Earth Day with a company picture. We wear our new Earth Day t- shirts and gather in front of our Polly Products sign. Every year we are blessed with bright sunshine for the picture. Please recycle as you are allowing finite natural resources to be reformed into usable products, instead of being squandered by burying Earth’s natural resources in landfills.

Recycled plastic benches are durable and attractive. ” Green Products for a Green World”
Recycled Plastic tables, benches, and casual furniture are very popular.
Polly Products manufactures products from recycled plastic. Why use recycled plastic? 1. Plastics are made from a finite natural resource; oil or natural gas. 2. Most post consumer plastics end up in the land fill; 3. Polly Products use the plastic containers from our house holds to make attractive long lasting products; 4. Recycled plastic once re-sized purified and reformed make attractive and durable products; 4. Virtually maintenance free park benches, picnic tables and casual furniture for both commercial and home use.
Possible new product
Considering adding this picnic table to our growing table line. Any comments on design? A re-seller in California showed this concept to a customer who pre ordered two against an order of one hundred. What do you think the viability of this 100 % recycled plastic table will be for public settings?
